Port Shepstone is one of the South Coast's largest towns situated approximately 132km South from Durban in KwaZulu-Natal. Umtentweni is a small Suburb in Port Shepstone, named after a species of grass that grows on the banks of the Mzimkulu River (meaning 'Home of all rivers') which is one of the main attraction in Port Shepstone. Been one of the largest rivers in KZN's South Coast, the river caters for some fun activities including kayaking, river rafting, skiing, kite surfing, wind surfing and boat trips for less active!. Amongst the glistening waters and green vegetation, a rich variety of birdlife can be spotted, and theres no better way to do this, than by taking a leisure boat trip upstream. The Mzimkulu River mouth opens up and joins the warm Indian ocean, giving the visitor the best of both worlds.
Between the Months on June and July, the famous Sardine run (Also referred to as "the greatest shoal on earth") starts and fishing enthusiasts from all over the country take part in the mad fishing frenzy. The Sardine Run occurs when millions of sardines migrate from the southern tip of Africa in the Western Cape, northwards along South Africa's coastline, right though the Eastern Cape and KZN's coastline, close to shore. The frenzy often results in fish washing up on KZN's beaches, giving fisherman and spectators a great treat. Shad is also a common catch off the Eastern Coast of South Africa and KZN.

ORIBI GORGE NEARBY PORT SHEPSTONE
Oribi Gorge boasts to be one of KwaZulu-Natal's most spectacular natural settings. Endless views of the scenic Gorge makes Oribi Gorge a very popular tourist hotspot! Approx. 21km inland from Port Shepstone (44km from Hibberdene) makes Oribi Gorge conveniently close for even day excursions. Self Guided Walking Trails, picnic Spots, Birdwatching and wildlife such as bushbuck, common reedbuck, oribi blue and grey duiker and sometimes leopard can be spotted in the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve.PORT SHEPSTONE LIGHTHOUSE
A noticeable feature thats stands out at the mouth of the Mzimkulu River (especially at night), is the powerful 27 000 candela Port Shepstone lighthouse.
